Newly Discovered Photograph of Damage from the 1868 Earthquake

While looking through old photographs at the Contra Costa County Historical Society, Heather Lackey unearthed a photograph of 1868 earthquake damage to a one-story building of sandstone blocks that was being built by Josiah Sturges, the proprietor of the nearby Alhambra Hotel. The building was later used a bank. Not only is this the northernmost damage photograph for the earthquake, but it is the only damage photograph that has been obtained from the east side of the fault. Thanks to Betty Maffei and Lee Taylor at Contra Costa County Historical Society for their help.
